Undead players are spawned at the player's death point. They are capable of picking up items, potentially saving some of the players more valuable items from despawning. Their name tag is like a player's and can be seen from a great distance through blocks. This can help players locate their last death-point and dropped items before they despawn.

The Zombie spawned is never a baby or a villager variant. The Zombie spawned will always be able to pick up armour and one item. They will naturally swap their item with a sword, and then that sword for a better one.
Undead Players are always a regular zombie (not a zombie villager or baby). They are persistent, and won't despawn naturally. The Zombie can wear armor and will hold the strongest weapon they find.

Previous Versions

MC 1.8 Version

In the MC 1.8 Versions (v1.1), a snowball was used to display the Undead Players' names. This caused incompatibility with Damaging Snowballs.

MC 1.9-1.12 Versions

In the MC 1.9-1.12 versions (v2.1-2.3), the advancements were actually a simulated achievement, using tellraw to show the message. This has been transferred to advancements upon the release of the 1.13 version (v3.0).
