When using a golden sword and if the player has any of the [[Potion Swords#Effects|4 compatible potions]] in their inventory, mobs (or in some cases the player) will be afflicted with a status effect without using up the potion. The striker will not be affected by any of the effects.

When attacking with a golden sword, players with [[Potion Swords#Effects|certain potions]] in their inventory will cause enemies nearby to be afflicted with a corresponding potion effect. With each strike, "a small amount of potion is sprayed into the air around the blade", thus never consuming the potion item in the process. The striker will not be affected by any of the effects.
=== Technical Summary ===
The area of effect is 2.5 blocks around the striker. The potion effects can be stacked, so a single sword swing can cause all 4 potion effects. The striker will not be affected by any potion effects.

Striking a skeleton with the Poison II potion in the player's inventory will turn it into a wither skeleton. The wither skeleton will still hold a bow, but the loot table will be empty.
